An Overview of Bilateral Trade between China and Central and Eastern European Countries in Q1 2025

Customs statistics show that the total value of bilateral trade between China and Central and Eastern European countries (hereinafter referred to as CEE) was RMB 242.18 billion in Q1 2025, an increase of 6.3% over the same period last year (the same below). Among them, the value of exports to CEE was RMB 197.31 billion, an increase of 10.2%, and that of imports from CEE was RMB 44.87 billion, a decrease of 8.1%.

The main features of bilateral trade between China and CEE in Q1 2025 are as follows:

(I) M&E products and labor-intensive products were the main exported products.

In Q1 2025, China exported RMB 138.37 billion of M&E products to CEE, an increase of 11.4%, accounting for 70.1% of the gross export value (the same below) from China to CEE in the same period. Among them, the value of electrical equipment & material reached RMB 16.82 billion, an increase of 33.4%; the value of automatic data processing equipment and its parts and components reached RMB 11.94 billion, a decrease of 5.7%. Over the same period, the export of labor-intensive products amounted to RMB 29.04 billion, a decrease of 1.5%, accounting for 14.7%. Among them, the value of textiles and garments was RMB 12.81 billion, an increase of 2.9%, and that of plastic products was RMB 4.85 billion, a decrease of 0.5%. In addition, the value of exported agricultural products reached RMB 2.42 billion, an increase of 7.4%, accounting for 1.2%; the value of exported foods reached RMB 1.34 billion, an increase of 16.8%.

(II) M&E products, metallic mineral ores, and copper materials were the main exported products.

In Q1 2025, China imported RMB 30.99 billion of M&E products from CEE, a decrease of 10.2%, accounting for 69.1% of the gross value of imports from CEE to China (the same below) over the same period. Among them, the value of automobiles reached RMB 7 billion, a decrease of 3.6%; the value of auto parts reached RMB 6.92 billion, a decrease of 7.9%. In the same period, the value of imported metal ore and ore sand reached RMB 3.57 billion, a decrease of 1.5%, accounting for 8% of the gross value of imports from CEE to China; The value of imported unwrought copper and copper material reached RMB 2.07 billion, a decrease of 4.6%, accounting for 4.6% of the gross value of imports from CEE to China. In addition, the import of agricultural products amounted to RMB 640 million, a decrease of 40.7%, accounting for 1.4%; imported food totaled RMB 450 million, a decrease of 22.4%.

(III) Poland, the Czech Republic, and Hungary rank as China’s top three food trade partners.

In Q1 2025, China's imports from and exports to Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary were RMB 77.32 billion, RMB 36.96 billion and RMB 29.66 billion respectively, with an increase of 6.8%, 0.2% and 17.6% respectively, accounting for 31.9%, 15.3% and 12.2% of China's gross import-export value from and to CEE in the same period.
